They dated for a year before their split was revealed last week.

And it’s now been claimed the ‘huge’ age gap between Jennifer Lawrence, 27, and Darren Aronofsky, 48, contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.

A source told the new issue of PEOPLE magazine that while the couple were ‘infatuated with the other,’ the 20-year age difference was the determining factor when they parted ways a month ago.

‘There is a huge age difference, and they are different people,’ the source said. ‘Each has to look practically to the future.

‘Jen has yet to figure out her life and how it will evolve. He has responsibilities in life that she has yet to experience. Each was infatuated with the other.

‘She was attracted to his brilliance and education, and he was in awe of her talent and personality. They have amazing respect for each other given the huge age gap, but other things were not on the same level.’

The couple started dating after filming wrapped for controversial psychological horror Mother!.

The thriller was directed and written by Aronofsky, with Jennifer starring alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Javier Bardem.

The source added: ‘Once they are onto new projects and interests, it’s harder to keep up relationships of any kind. They were never destined for marriage. They had fun, shared many beliefs, and enjoyed what they could learn from each other.’

The notoriously private duo had kept their relationship hidden from the public eye until their debut as a couple at the Venice Film Festival in September.

The pal continued: ‘Although they are both kind of kooky and unusual, he is quieter while she speaks from the hip and loves to astonish. They are both workhorses but personally different. It was fun while it lasted.’

The revelation comes just one day after Jennifer admitted their different reactions to the mostly negative reviews for Mother! caused a strain on their relationship.

Speaking with Adam Sandler during the seventh Variety Studio:Actors on Actors, released on Tuesday, Jennifer explained: ‘We’d be on the tour together. I’d come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.’

‘He comes back from the tour, and that’s all he wants to talk about. I get it; it’s his baby. He wrote it; he conceived it; he directed it.’

‘I was doing double duty trying to be supportive partner while also being like, “Can I please, for the love of God, not think about Mother! for one second?”

But she said he would start reading her the reviews of the critically-panned movie, something she no longer does because it’s ‘not healthy’.

‘I’m not going to do it, because if I read it, I start getting defensive.’ Especially because it’s my man,’ Jennifer said in the interview conducted prior to her split from the director.

‘I don’t want to sound in an interview that I’m defending what we’re doing in any way. It’s awesome, what we did.

‘The people who hate it really hate it. But it’s nothing that needs to be defended. If I read a negative review, I just feel defensive.’

Jennifer recently revealed she harbored a crush on Darren long before they started officially working together.

‘I had a crush on him when he pitched to me, and that was like a year before we started rehearsing, but he was a professional, which only made it worse for me,’ she recently told The Hollywood Report’s Awards Chatter podcast.

Eventually their friendship turned romantic.

She added: ‘So we just kind of formed a friendship. He knew how I felt, he never told me how he felt.

‘I mean, I assumed – but we just formed a friendship, and then the friendship turned into a partnership for the movie once we started working.

‘And then, when the movie was done, I was like, “Alright, you’re my boyfriend!” And he was like, “Alright, I’m your boyfriend.”‘
